The Free Directory List Rolls On

Info Vilesilencer Logo

Due to the unprecented number of hits the list is getting, I decided to give the info.vilesilencer.com site a little face lift (face being the operative word) to bring it more in-line with vilesilencer as far as recognition goes. The free directory list is a resource for webmasters with 204 (currently) links to directories that offer free, general, no-reciprocal link required admission into their various categories. Helping populate a directory can work in a webmaster’s favour later on down the track when the directory begins to increase in traffic/recognition, particularly in the category their site is located in. This in turn has a knock-on effect which will boost the traffic being sent to the webmaster’s site. The more directories you add your site to the more little boosts you get.

I’m not the only one with a list of directories. There are many of them out there that list far more directories (because they include the ones that you will have to pay in some way for, whether that be a reciprocal link, a one-off fee, or pay-per-click). Because these lists also are useful resources I have created a list of directory lists also on the info site.

Another popular aspect of the info site, is the user agent list. What the hell is that? A user agent is just any device that interprets HTML documents. It includes browsers, proxies and search robots. It’s the latter that my user agent list concentrates upon. It’s a list of the spiders, crawlers and bots that parse webpages. A well-known example is googlebot 2.1 from Google. There are many more of them out there though, and I’ve chosen to document them so that other webmasters interested in what bots are visiting their sites can find out some background about them or attempt to help me in identifying them. I will begin linking the bots to their respective web homes, time permitting, in the coming months as I’d like to increase the usefulness of the resource. I’m also looking to add the IP ranges that the bots come in from. All in good time though.

If you have any resources that fit into the above categories, or that you would like to see on the info.vilesilencer.site, please contact me using the contact form on this site or the info site. I’ve added lots of content lately from contributors, and I appreciate those who have submitted this useful information. Sharing this information benefits all webmasters.

Camera-less Digital Photography

Australian Idol is starting to gather momentum with the final 12 now announced. They are (in no particular order): Amali Ward (f), Angie Narayan (f), Anthony Callea (m), Casey Donovan (f), Chanel Cole (f), Courtney Murphy (m), Dan O’Connor (m), Daniel Belle (m), Emelia Rusciano (f), Hayley Jensen (f), Marty Worrall (m), and Ricki-Lee Coulter. The Australian Idol Forum needs to start firing up now that we are in the final 12 stage of the competition, so sign up and share your opinion with the rest of the great people already there.

Telstra’s very own bum, Civick, introduced me to Salad Fingers one of the weirdest net freaks I’ve ever come across. This reminded me of that long running flash site newgrounds that has many many flash animations but none more classic or disturbing than Britney Spears Getting A Dirty Sanchez. Strong stomachs recommended (for the belly laugh) hehehehe.

It’s amazing how much you miss something so small when it isn’t around to take snaps of opportunities that don’t always present themselves to you. For those who don’t know I own a Canon IXUS 400 Digital Camera, which has been used for all the digital photography on the vilesilencer site. By all accounts it is an amateur camera designed for quick and easy snaps, and since it fits in your pocket it can come in handy. Especially for those armed only with tripod mounted behemoths that need 3 days of perfect light to achieve their ideal shots, the ixus gives you the freedom to take the shots that don’t require artistic perfection (which is about 99% of all the shots I take anyways)…For the last fortnight I have been without said camera (a family member currently in the Kimberley’s in outback Australia has borrowed it) and I have missed the opportunity to take photos of my friend Nathan’s 30th. Ahhh well a good time was had by all, and since I was well and truly drunkskies I probably wouldn’t have taken any in-focus shots anyways. Happy Birthday Old Man and congrats on making it to the big three 0.

Not much else to report at this stage… I still haven’t thought about the long overdue facelift that this site requires. The dilapidated nested tables are starting to crack under their own weight and with only 10 meg left in the hosting bank the animal is fast outgrowing its cage. With that in mind I shifted another resource to the CSS tutorials and SEO resources site. The Add URL page has been updated and moved as it is more an SEO resource than pure silencer content. It is an important page in the scheme of search engine optimisation as it contains a large list of directories and search engines (all free no catches) that you can add your site to, in order to increase your traffic. If those pages all contain good Pagerank (PR), then the in-bound links to your site will also boost your PR. In theory anyways :)

Big Brother 4 Australia - Reality Is Back

Saturday, April 10th, 2004

Big Brother Australia is back with season 4 of the popular series set to kick off any week now. BB4 forums and chatrooms are buzzing in anticipation of what the much-hyped secret is going to be. In preparation for the coming series return, the webmaster at iServ and myself have revived the immensely popular #Big Brother Chatroom, and have also added a Big Brother Forum this year to catch up on all the gossip and insider info from the show. It’s going to be very big, so I suggest people get into the rooms now, while there are still hosting positions available and make your presence felt. Also register on the forum early, and get to know everyone there in advance. I’ve stuck 2 easy to get to links to the BB4 Forum and the BB4 chatroom on the left under the SEO resources menu. Big Brother is watching you :)

I’ve added a new information line above the user agent list count, where I will inform of what digital photography has been added to the site. Since I don’t add photography with each update, that line will only appear when I do add a new gallery of digital photos. This time around I have added the shots taken from the trip to Melbourne. Funnily enough, only 2 of the shots that are added are actually from Melbourne. The weather was so dreadful that most of the shots that were taken weren’t up to the usual standard so I scrapped them. The other shots are taken on the trip back to Sydney via the South Coast, at such places as Eden where we spent a night, and Bermagui where we had a couple of brilliant days of fishing (remember the puffer fling Dave? hahaha, I’m still cracking up), as well as Lakes Entrance and Bega.

Other updates? Yup, there’s more peeps. I’ve been spending a fair bit of time at my favourite Webdesign and SEO forum, and shortly I will be including a link to their Feature Site. This will be an ongoing thing, where the Web World Geek community bands together to improve a lucky persons site design and rankings. It’s a novel idea and so I’ve decided to jump on the bandwagon and support it with a free link from my site. Stay tuned, it will more than likely take place next update.

Lastly, I’ve added 3 more random banners. That makes a set of 11. Hit refresh a couple of times and you’ll see what the hell I’m talking about. 2 of the banners are shots taken from Lakes Entrance which I have converted, and the other one is from Bermagui, though it doesn’t do the fantastic fishing area justice.

Melbourne photos added to the digital photography gallery.

Wildfire Restaurant

Slowly recharging the batteries after the recent marriage of 2 great friends from Chicago.

Congratulations Andrew & Dana!

So, what did we all get up to on the week they were here?

On Thursday we had the wedding rehearsal at Vaucluse House, before scooting off to Wildfire Restaurant at the Overseas Passenger Terminal overlooking the Sydney Harbour and Opera House.

Then on Friday we jumped on the Silver Spirit and cruised around the harbour sinking drinks, engaging in mirth and taking many many photos, before retiring to the Cargo Bar for more drinks, and more mirth. We bumped into old friends from High School on their Hens night, which was fun. Great to catch up with them. Back to the Sheraton after that after a bout of taxi rage, and it was all goodskies for the wedding at Vaucluse House the next day. The wedding was pretty fantastic. Perhaps the best I’ve been to or witnessed, and I’ve been at tonnes. The speeches were both heartfelt and humourous, and the guests were exceptionally friendly.

I’ve created a new subdomain info.vilesilencer.com that I will be using to house tutorials, PC articles, plus webdesign and SEO resources. It’s brand spanking new (googlebot has already crawled it though - love that), so there is only one tutorial currently available the CSS rollover tutorial which I previously had on the old redline tripod site in a javascript mouseover version. I’ve also taken the search engine and webmaster resources offline for the time being as certain myths have been dispelled and I’m not entirely encouraged by the format in which I presented the material.

I will re-introduced both of these, as well as adding the long-ago compiled directories list and user agent list (which will both remain updated on here for the time being) on the new subdomain when I get the time. Which could take a while. Either way the links will remain on this site, they will just send you to the subdomain pages. The pure CSS format of that site is more pleasing to the eye.

Cougar XS Bourbon

Had the last 20’s bday I will ever have on the 3rd of the 3rd. Next year I’m expecting a rocking chair and a throw rug for my knees as a present hehehe. I didn’t have any luck with the bday scratchies, unlike xmas where I kept the run going till late Feb, but the 700ML bottle of Cougar XS bourbon (the XS stands for extra strength, its 43.0% alc/vol, thats 86.0% US proof to you yanks) really hit the spot! Yes its empty and yes I got shitfaced on it. For something thats approximately 24 standard drinks can you blame me? hehehe. I’ve been lazy with the updates, and I have a lot of photography off the camera but not uploaded which I will get to in time.

The geek has given a full account of our Melbourne-Eden-Bermagui trip as well as a nice update on where he’s headed at the moment. Whilst controversy continues to rage over at the Australian Chat Forums over how much of a loser the confirmed script-ripper known as Tanthalas really is. By the looks of the posts on there, he’s not liked. In fact fucken hated is probably a better way of putting it :) That many opinions can’t be wrong, and considering he has been the one and only person to defend his position of not being a loser, with absolutely no success, I’d say it’s time for him to wrap up the phone cord, unplug the modem, pack away the PC and bid farewell to the net. That’s my 2c worth, and given the response on the forums, the weight of the nation, nay the world, agrees with me. Ain’t that just dandy.

Takes me back to the days of the insightful Watchdog’s Corner, a brilliant early edition site by the current iServ webmaster, that told it exactly like it is. No punches pulled. Not enough of that these days. Too many people dodging bullets. Ahh I miss the old girl it was a chance to unleash the rage, in an informative way.

Been frequenting a few SEO forums of late, and it would seem that I’m missing a few things on here that I really should have. I’ve added a site map for my search engine spider friends, so that they can have fun finding all my pages. I’ve done a basic one for now but I have a lot more pages that should probably be added so I will cover them off in time (maybe).
